We deliver all manner of new build and resurfacing contracts, large or small, any time of the day or night, seven days a week.

We carry a broad client base experience ranging from Highways Agency and Local Authority trunk road maintenance schemes to private sector domestic driveways.

We have a comprehensive range of plant and equipment to cater for both large areas and smaller restricted sized sites.

Our workforce is experienced and fully qualified to the appropriate NVQ standards and our surfacing operations are accredited to National Highway Sector Scheme 16.

Whilst the vast majority of our activities operate around the North East of England, we do travel further afield to deliver schemes as preferred contractor status with select national based clients.

We operate an efficient planing service to compliment our surfacing activities when required.

The whole planing operation is executed by wholly owned equipment. Our planers were purchased to be mainly dedicated to our own contractual requirements however they can be available for hire at certain times of the year. Road arisings are removed from site to our recycling facility at Hendon Docks at The Port of Sunderland where the planings undergo a screening process to enable reuse in various different ways.

The activities are monitored and managed in accordance with our site waste management plans which assist in our commitment to reducing our carbon count.

Recycled Materials

We produce and supply a range of recycled aggregate products for use in the local construction market. We handle circa. 100,000 tonnes of incoming waste material per year which is processed by crushing, screening and blending with planings to produce certified products.

Our 27,000 m2 site at the Port of Sunderland is securely fenced off and has its own weighbridge covered by CCTV. Northumbrian Roads operate within the strict guidelines of its waste management license and segregates its incoming waste in line with its Quality Plan.

Northumbrian Roads can draw upon experienced resources within the workforce to deliver groundwork preparation as a wider benefit to compliment our surfacing services.

We are capable of delivering and managing the "whole package" and have experienced civil engineers within our management structure to be able to provide excellent "value engineering" solutions to projects.

Groundwork elements include;

Northumbrian Roads own their own haulage fleet capable of moving over 250,000 tonnes of material every year.

They are maintained in accordance with transport regulations and our purpose built workshop facility enables punctual maintenance without affecting contract performance.

Our drivers are fully trained and conversant in fuel efficient driving techniques.

We operate an ambitious investment budget set aside for rolling renewal and expansion of the fleet.

Our fleet can transport road planings, blacktop materials and recycled materials as well as non hazardous waste for processing.

We operate a "live" vehicle tracking system which allows quick reaction to change and improved efficiency practices.

Northumbrian Roads is not just a road surfacing contractor, we are an established manufacturer of compliant asphalt materials.

In 2007, we opened our asphalt coating plant at The Port of Sunderland. The plant is capable of mixing 160 tonnes of material per hour and has over 100 recipe mixes stored in its database. It has produced over half a million tonnes of asphalt to date and is very reliable and flexible. The plant has hot storage capacity for 100 tonnes and has its own weighbridge attached. The asphalt plant is run by a very sophisticated management IT system which enables precise product mixes to be manufactured.

In 2017 we opened our second asphalt plant based within The Port of Tyne, North Shields. This significant investment made in this state of the art asphalt plant enables the production of asphalt materials at a rate of 240 tonnes of material per hour. 96,000 tonnes of material has been produced in the first 12 months of operation.

We manage the quality of our products in compliance with CPR.

The testing of materials is carried out by our Lab Technician at our testing lab based at our site at The Port of Tyne. All of which is over seen by our Technical Manager.

The coating plants supply materials to our own surfacing teams however we do have an established “collect” trade and having a second plant has enabled us to have the have spare capacity to deliver to third parties.
